Installation for Earthmoving Equipment Sprockets

  1. Machine LOTO: Apply site earthmoving equipment LOTO procedure. Park with all implements lowered, hydraulics depressurised, electrical isolated.
  2. Allow engine to cool below 50°C before accessing engine compartment chain drives.
  3. Drain oil from engine PTO gearbox if replacing internal sprockets. Catch oil in approved container; do not allow contamination of surrounding ground.

Most large hydraulic excavator pump drives use ANSI #50 (15.875 mm, 5/8") or ANSI #60 (19.05 mm, 3/4") roller chain in an oil-bath environment within the engine compartment. The exact specification varies by machine size and manufacturer — consult the machine service manual or provide the machine model for our team to identify the correct specification.
► Can I use standard C45 induction-hardened sprockets on earthmoving equipment?
C45 induction-hardened is acceptable for engine PTO drives (pump drive, A/C compressor drive) operating in oil-bath conditions at moderate loads. For high-shock external drives, final-drive auxiliary chains, and crawler track-drive positions, 40Cr alloy steel with deep case hardening (HRC 52–62) is required to withstand the combined vibration, shock, and contamination environment.
► How do I prevent sprocket loosening due to earthmoving machine vibration?
Use an H6 bore tolerance (tighter than standard H7) for precision shaft fit. Apply Loctite 638 retaining compound (not thread-lock) between the bore and shaft at installation. Engine PTO and pump-drive chains in earthmoving equipment are typically lubricated by oil-bath or splash lubrication from the engine or gearbox oil. For external drives (fan drive, compressor drive) without oil-bath, apply ISO VG 68 chain oil manually every 100–200 operating hours or per the machine service manual.
