Pignoni per macchine movimento terra
Excavators, bulldozers, motor graders, scrapers, and compactors all rely on auxiliary roller chain drives to power accessory systems including hydraulic pump drives, cab air-conditioning compressor drives, engine cooling fan drives, and work-implement secondary drives. These earthmoving equipment chain drive sprockets must withstand extreme vibration, contamination from clay and rock dust, high ambient temperatures, and the shock loads of heavy construction operation. Panoramica
Modern large earthmoving machines (100–700 tonne class) use roller chain drives in several critical auxiliary systems. The most common applications are:
• Engine PTO pump drive chains: Transmit engine torque to hydraulic pumps at high speed — typically ANSI #50 or #60, running in oil-bath conditions inside the engine compartment.
• Cab A/C compressor drive chains: Power the air-conditioning compressor from the engine accessory drive — ANSI #40 or #50 in a partially enclosed environment.
• Cooling fan drive chains: On large mining excavators, hydraulic fan drives use ANSI #60 or #80 chains with high-precision sprockets for uniform fan speed.
• Track-drive auxiliary chains: Some crawler machines use roller chain segments in the final-drive reduction — heavy-duty ANSI #100 or #120 with 40Cr alloy sprockets.

Selection Guide
| 📏 | Machine type & position | Engine PTO/pump drive: ANSI #50 or #60 C45 hardened. Fan drive: Grade 6 precision ANSI #60. Final/track auxiliary: ANSI #80–#120 40Cr alloy. Identify position first to determine load and precision requirement. |
| 🔥 | Load & shock factor | Calculate peak pitch-line load including shock factor (2.5–5× for earthmoving). If load exceeds C45 rating, specify 40Cr alloy steel. Our engineering team can perform a load calculation from motor rating and drive ratio. |
| 🔧 | Bore & hub specification | Engine compartment drives: H7 finished bore with Loctite 638. External drives with vibration: H6 bore with double key. Track/final drives: Type C double hub, solid bore, H6 minimum. |
| 📋 | Documentation for mine site | Specify EN 10204 3.1 material cert for all 40Cr alloy sprockets. Hardness test certificate and dimensional report also available on request for mine-site QMS compliance. |
Installation for Earthmoving Equipment Sprockets
- Machine LOTO: Apply site earthmoving equipment LOTO procedure. Park with all implements lowered, hydraulics depressurised, electrical isolated.
- Allow engine to cool below 50°C before accessing engine compartment chain drives.
- Drain oil from engine PTO gearbox if replacing internal sprockets. Catch oil in approved container; do not allow contamination of surrounding ground.
- Remove old sprocket with two-jaw puller. For heavy track-drive sprockets, use certified lifting equipment rated for the sprocket weight.
- Inspect shaft and keyway. Apply Loctite 638 retaining compound (not thread-lock) to the shaft bore interface before installing the new sprocket.
- Install new sprocket with hydraulic press or bearing heater for H6 fits. Torque all fasteners to specification.
- Align drive and driven sprockets with precision straight-edge or laser tool — target ≤0.5 mm lateral offset. Earthmoving machine vibration amplifies misalignment effects.
- Install chain, set tension per OEM service manual. Refill oil to specified level.
- Run at low idle for 15 minutes before full-load operation. Check for oil leaks and unusual noise.
Troubleshooting Earthmoving Sprockets
| Sintomo | Causa probabile | Azione consigliata |
|---|---|---|
| Engine compartment sprocket loosening | Vibration-induced bore fretting | Remove; apply Loctite 638; reinstall to H6 tolerance |
| Rapid tooth wear (dust exposure) | External drive without adequate enclosure | Add sealed chain guard; dacromet sprocket |
| Chain jumping on fan drive | Worn precision sprocket causing velocity ripple | Replace with Grade 6 CNC-hobbed sprocket |
| Bore cracking on track drive | Under-specified material (C45 in shock application) | Replace with 40Cr alloy steel sprocket |
| Chain overheating in engine compartment | Insufficient lubrication at high temp | Verify oil-bath level; upgrade to ISO VG 220 |
